Malcolm Diggs
Malcolm Diggs

Engineering Manager & Host

Malcolm has been a Software Engineer and Engineering Manager for over two decades. He originally conceived of Journal Club as a meetup group, but couldn't get enough people interested in showing up in-person. So he took it online, and voila! It worked! Malcolm covers all things C.S., from Data Structure & Algorithms, to DevOps best-practices to new programming languages.
Alex Jonasse
Alex Jonasse

Operations Manager & Host

Alex is the Operations Manager at Journal Club, which mostly involves keeping the wheels on while the cart is still being built. With a background in theatre and marketing, she brings a creative eye to structure and problem-solving. She favors papers in social sciences and psychology, and enjoys hosting Journal Club episodes because it’s less awkward than talking to herself. Outside of work, Alex can usually be found reading science fiction and taking notes, just in case.
Luis López
Luis López

In his role as producer, he is now combining his joy of storytelling through audiovisual media with his curiosity for learning about all sorts of subjects.

Host: Micro, Nano, and Quantum Technology

I'm a nanotechnology researcher developing membranes with 2D materials for desalination and water treatment applications. I studied a masters in Chemical Engineering at the University of Manchester in the UK and I completed my PhD in nanoscience. In and out of the lab, I’m fascinated by water. Scuba diving, cold water swimming, or trekking to lakes, you name it, I’m into it. I’m also a travel writer, focusing on how we can move towards greener, more sustainable travel.

Host: Public Health

I'm a Science Communicator and Ecologist who loves nothing more than sharing stories about science, nature, and all the neat aspects of our weird and wonderful world with others. I studied Ecology at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. Soon after graduating I moved to Ecuador where I would do research on the ecology of invertebrates from the Amazon rainforest. I always loved writing and storytelling and I soon realized that Science Communication was my calling. I am passionate about helping others get excited about science and how it can improve our world for the better.

Host: Green Technology

I’m an environmental scientist and organizer currently focused on the intersection of the housing and climate crises and working to build sustainable communities in the Midwest through co-operative food and housing projects. I have taught English in Bogotá, Colombia, done grassroots immigration labor organizing, helped launch co-operative, affordable housing projects, written a couple million dollars worth of grants for a harm reduction agency, and am becoming a mom this July. My technical work has focused on the chemistry of water and air pollution, using integrated assessment models to analyze the intersection of climate science and economics, and finding technical and policy solutions to per- and poly fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in our water systems. I can’t wait to explore research on the environment, technology, and policy with you all here on Journal Club.
